The Kamus Quartet and Alba Records have released an album For The Baltic Sea in cooperation with the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG). The album combines great music, Finnish elements from the top of classical music and an important message about the protection of the Baltic Sea. The record book contains a text about the Baltic Sea prepared by BSAG’s Anna Klemelä and the Kamus Quartet in Finnish, Swedish and English.
Alba Records will donate part of the record proceeds to the Baltic Sea Action Group’s work for the Baltic Sea. On the album, Andrea Tarrodi and Lotta Wennäkoski represent contemporary music composed by women, with Carl Nielsen and Wilhelm Stenhammar representing the music of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as the latter celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.
The records are printed according to the Ecopak model developed by the BIS record company, which is currently the most ecological way to publish music.

Kamus-kvartetti: Itämerelle. Alba. ★★★★
AINUTLAATUISELLE, uhanalaiselle murtovesialtaalle omistettu levy kiertää Itämeren länsi- ja pohjoisrantaa. Carl Nielsenin ponnekkaasta nuoruudenkvartetosta saavutaan Wilhelm Stenhammarin lyyrisvoittoisen VI jousikvarteton kautta Lotta Wennäkosken eteerisesti puhaltelevaan Culla d’aria -kvartettoon ja Andrea Tarrodin alttoviulun ja sellon duettoon Sorg och glädje, jonka alkuperäisen, tenorille sävelletyn version runo on Runebergin kynästä.
Kamus-kvartetin tulkintaote on keskittynyt, sävyasteikoltaan osuva ja voimallinen, kuin lämmin ja luja syleily. Osa levyn tuotosta menee Elävä Itämeri -säätiölle.
Quartette aus dem Baltikum mit dem Kamus Quartet
The Kamus Quartet, founded in 2002, has recorded a program of music from the Baltic region. First up is Carl Nielsen’s First String Quartet in an exceedingly fine and soulful interpretation. The quartet plays with a clear and at the same time warm sound. The directly enthusiastic Scherzo is very pleasing, with special attention paid to the folkloric trio in the middle of the movement. The passionate final movement is also superbly accomplished.
Stenhammar’s late sixth quartet is set in a very different world. It explores new directions on the threshold from late Romanticism to Impressionism. In the first movement, the Kamus Quartet transports us to mysteriously ethereal sound worlds that alternate with quite earthly passages. The remaining movements of this beautiful quartet are also explored in an inspired manner, with the slow movement in particular becoming very moving for the listener.
A very modern piece follows, Culla d’aria (Cradle of Air) by Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoskidas. It evolves in 11 minutes from sparse swinging sounds (they sound like an unoiled metal door moving in the wind) to somewhat more vital sonic figures before a stillness of wind at the end makes for barely audible sounds.
The final piece is an elegiac duet for viola and cello, Sånger av sorg och glädje (Songs of Sorrow and Joy), by Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi. It is atmospherically played by Jussi Tuhkanen and Petja Kainulainen.

Kamus Quartetin Itämerelle-levy on ehdolla vuoden 2022 EMMA Gaalassa Vuoden Klassisen palkinnon saajaksi
