Alasaarela, Hannu (b. 1994)

Piano

During his first years with the piano, he was exploring the instrument independently and improvised. He also made small compositions. The unusual growth platform had its effect, as later his playing has been praised for, among other things, that “his playing is not the same as others, and it does not represent any traditional school” (YLE 31.8.2017).

Alasaarela’s playing has also been described in the media as “bright, sensitive, transparently clear and rhythmically flexible alive” (HS 25.8.2017) and “extremely refined and even aristocratically elegant” (Kaleva 21.9.2019). Alasaarela was graduated from the Oulunsalo Art School and the Sibelius Academy and has gained visibility for his work in several piano competitions, in the international Maj Lind piano competition 2017, he represented Finland in the finals as the only European pianist. He has played as a soloist in several Finnish orchestras and performed as a chamber musician and as a soloist in many music festivals in Finland.

Alasaarela has been able to draw inspiration and influences from numerous pedagogues and artists, for whom we must especially thank his longeststanding teachers Kimmo Pihlajamaa, Jouko Tötterström, Tuija Hakkila, and Ilmo Ranta.

Alasaarela plays music throughout the entire history of music and still does compositions and arrangements. He is also inspired by natural sciences, literature, and philosophy.
