The Art of Transcription II
The Art of Piano Transcription II
Risto-Matti Mar's piano
The piano transcriptions interpreted by Marin continue
Risto-Matti Marin's new album The Art of Piano Transcription II offers different perspectives on the tonal properties of the piano. There are as many points of view as there are arrangers, and they all have their own personal way of approaching the sound of the piano.
The works heard on the disc are Vladimir Horowitz's (1904-1989) transcription of Camille Saint-Saëns' (1835-1921) Danse macabre arranged by Franz Liszt (1811-1886), Alexander Silot's (1863-1945) transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) Air (Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068), Earl Wild (1915-2010)'s transcription of Sergei Rachmaninov's (1870-1943) Vocalise (op. 38 No. 14), Sebastian Fagerlund's (b. 1972) Licht im Licht (2007) (Fantasia nach J. Brahms: Variationen über ein Thema von Haydn) and Franz Liszt's transcription of Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) four-part work From the Fate Symphony (Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67).
Matti Heinonen made the excellent recording of the album in Helsinki's John's Church.
Risto-Matti Marin has received the third prize in the international Weimar Franz Liszt piano competition in 2003. It was preceded by the first prize in the Kuopio piano competition in 1996 and the Helmi Vesa piano competition in 1999. Marin has performed as a soloist with the Weimar Staatskapelle, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Kuopio City Orchestra, the Jyväskylä Symphony and other orchestras. He has made several CD releases, the first solo album appeared in 2005, the second solo album The Art of Transcription in 2007 and the third, Piano Tales in 2009. Marin also performs constantly as a chamber musician together with saxophonist Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo. They have also premiered twenty works for saxophone and piano, the most recent of which was the premiere of Paavo Heininen's saxophone sonata at the Viitasaari Music Time festival in the summer of 2009.

Reviews

  • Risto-Matti Marin is a gifted pianist, imaginative, musical, with excellent technique, great reserves of energy, and an intuitive grasp of music from any era. He’s as convincing in Bach as in Miettinen or Britten, never mannered or artificial. His four CDs offer a wide range of repertoire, all beautifully performed. His special interest in transcription has led him to such forgotten scores as the Liszt/Stradal symphonic poems, of which my favorite is Les Préludes, but there are numerous other…

  • The 35 year-old Finnish pianist Risto-Matti Marin is a brilliant musician with a strong personality and technical skills of an uncommonly high order. His exploration of unusual repertoire and distinctive ideas about programming make these discs a true tour de force. Marin’s doctoral work at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy involves transcriptions and it’s the two all-transcription discs that make the strongest impression. This is not to say that Piano Tales, which contains mostly non-transcribed,…

”Risto-Matti Marin on suomalaisen nuoren polven mielenkiintoisimpia pianisteja ja erityisen kunnioitettavaa on hänen pioneerintyönsä harvinaisen repertuaarin parissa. Marin on todellinen pianovirtuoosi, jonka soittimen hallinta ja soinnillinen kvaliteetti on maailmanluokan tasoa.”
