About this release

Six of the album's nine texts are from the poetry collection "Pisaroita iholla" (1978). It was also the name of the first performance of the song series in Rovaniemi on 19 December 2019 with the Lapland Chamber Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds. However, I wanted to name this album differently: "Selja". This is because Sirkka Selja, who wrote these flowing poems that often find their motifs in nature, is perhaps not as well known as his contemporaries Aila Meriluoto, Aale Tynni, Eila Kivikk´aho or Kirsi Kunnas. After reading the poems for the first time, they began to live their musical life in my mind in their lyrical form, and the actual composition process was easy. Annimaria Rinne, who encouraged me to make this a series of orchestral songs, interprets the songs beautifully, and Ville Herrala and Ville Pynssi bring a nice, jazzy addition to the album with their contributions both as soloists and as accompanists.

Pianisti Seppo Kantosella riittää meriittejä. Muusikko on tehnyt pitkän päivätyön muun muassa UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestran, saksofonisti Eero Koivistoisen sekä rumpali Jukkis Uotilan projekteissa, eikä ole arkaillut pistää pystyyn omia yhtyeitään.
Selja vaikuttaa poikkeukselliselta julkaisulta taiteilijan tuotannossa. Albumi koostuu laulusarjasta, jonka Seppo Kantonen sävelsi Sirkka Seljan runoihin. Pianistia tukevat John Storgårdsin johtama Lapin…

Seppo Kantosen orgaaninen sävelkieli saa Seljan runot soimaan
Sirkka Selja ei ole yhtä tunnettu runoilija kuin aikalaisensa Aale Tynni ja Eila Kivikk’aho, mutta vahvasti hänen sanansa soivat, ainakin Seppo Kantosen uudessa laulusarjassa, josta Alba on juuri julkaissut levyn. Kantosen sävelkielessä ja levyn esittäjistössä eri genret yhdistyvät kitkatta, mikä avaa tilaa Seljan omaääniselle, unenomaiselle luontolyriikalle.
