The first concert of the Jazz Museum Orchestra was organized at the Emil Aaltonen Museum in February 2012. The idea of a jazz orchestra performing at the museum started when Arto Piispanen had given concerts there a few times, e.g. with Masa Orpana, and the museum started planning to organize a series of jazz concerts. Piispanen contacted Orpana, who took the idea forward to Ville Rauhala and Lauri Hannu. At a joint gig around the same time, the musicians began to develop the idea further.
The Jazz Museum's concerts, each of which has its own theme, have been organized six times a year since the beginning. In the beginning, Piispanen, Orpana, Rauhala and Hannu performed in concerts under their own names, using the working name Museobändi for their orchestra.
Ever since the word started to spread after the first concert in 2012 organized with the theme of Pirkanmaa's composers' music, the concerts have almost always been sold out. The spring 2016 Coltrane-themed concert even proved so popular that two of them were held in a row on the same evening. Some concerts have also featured guests.
The idea of a concert recording, which had been pending for a long time, started to materialize in the fall season of 2017 as a result of many factors, and it was decided to carry out the recording in connection with the spring 2018 concerts. When planning the program and choosing the material to be recorded, special attention was paid to the unique acoustics of the concert space and to the fact that the songs would have characteristics typical of the Jazz Museum.
In the material selected for the album, the orchestra members' own compositions and previously unrecorded songs are represented, which together form a complete musical entity. The role of Markus Pajakkala, who has been collaborating with the members of the orchestra in different contexts for years, as the record's recorder and mixer is also significant from the point of view of the whole.
