About this release

The Swedish Uspenie vigil has been born over a long period of time between 1984 and 2019, and its earlier parts have been performed and recorded before. The first version of the entire work was completed for the 150th anniversary of the Uspenski Cathedral in 2018, where a large part of it was sung by the Uspenski Cathedral Choir dir.cant. Led by Varvara Merras-Häyrynen.
Vigilia is the cornerstone of Orthodox music, from which composers starting with Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff and in Finland Einojuhani Rautavaara have created artistically shaped ensembles. A fully composed Uspenie vigil is still a rarity. Ruottinen's vigil can be characterized as a well-composed whole, designed to meet the requirements of Finnish service use. The work, matured over forty years, contains quite different songs in style, which can nevertheless be placed in different traditions of Orthodox music.
