About this release

The World is Born brings together early Baroque music, Finnish folk music and traditional runo singing. Mezzo-soprano Virpi Räisänen and runo singer Taito Hoffrén join the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, FiBO. The programme includes music by Monteverdi, Merula, Uccellini and Valderrábano alongside traditional tunes. Baroque instruments are heard together with kanteles, Finnish bowed lyres, overtone flutes and birch trumpets.

Reviews

The concept and dramaturgy of the album keep the listener wonderfully captivated for an hour, and the best moments in fact come towards the end, where the Baroque musicians really let it rip with ‘Pinnin polska’ and ‘Nuoren vaimon speli’[Young wife’s tune]. The infectious joy of traditional fiddler dances transcends stylistic boundaries.
