SAXOPHONE ROMANCE
Heavenly Duke Ellington and Radion Viihdeorkester's old repertoire
Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo's new recording Saxophone Romance contains a bundle of both Radion Viihdeorkester's old repertoire from the 1950s and Tuomisalo's own arrangements of songs made famous by Duke Ellington with a jazz trio and strings.
A group of Finnish musicians from Aale Lindgrén to Tero Lindberg and Lily-Marlene Puuseppi, as well as from Marko Portini to Linda Hedlund and Seeli Toivio, will be playing. An additional challenge to Tuomisalo's soloist duties was also acting as a conductor on the album. The jazz trio Risto-Matti Marin, Vesa Ojaniemi and Mikko Arlin are responsible for the great swing of Ellington's songs.
In a charming way, old-fashioned music in great postmodern interpretations!
His jazz playing is thoroughly uninformed, lacking ease, voicing, diction, and general style—he comes across as someone struggling to speak a foreign language.

Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo quite obviously has an outstanding technique on the alto sax, and there are moments when he does indeed improvise, showing that he can play jazz, but with such a square and uninteresting background to his playing there’s little to enjoy.

Most of the non-Ellington tracks will be more familiar to European listeners than to those in North America, but a few stand out, such as the Drigo “Valse Bluette.” The surround sonics, which place the musicians on a very wide soundstage, add to the enjoyment of the album.
