Osmo Palmu guitar
Spanish guitar compositions
At the Tampere Guitar Festival event on 15.6. The repertoire of the five composers of the published Recital Español album forms three musical ensembles from three eras of Spain's colorful history, as skilled interpretations by guitarist Osmo Palmu:
The oldest music is from almost 500 years ago. Luis de Milán's sprawling fantasias and elegant pavanas from the collection El Maestro (1536) were originally composed for the Spanish vihuela, a kind of intermediate form between the early and modern guitar.
Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) was born at a time when the appreciation of the guitar as an art instrument was low. Tárrega renewed the sound world and technique of the guitar and had a significant impact on the instrument's new popularity. An essential reason for Tárrega to be taken into account was also his compositions, which have more content, thoughtful poetry and compositional skill rare for other guitar composers of his time. Also, Tárrega's skillful arrangements (on the album Estudio Brillante de Alard, which is originally a violin etude by the French Jean-Delphine Alard) insightfully transfer the spirit of the music to the guitar's own language.
Manuel de Falla's work Homenaje became the first signature work of the 20th century for the guitar. The song is an elaborately composed, habanera-rhythmic obituary for the French master of timbres, Claude Debussy, who died in 1918. Federico Moreno Torroba's impressionistic Nocturno is an exception in the composer's extensive guitar output, and the influence of French impressionism can also be heard in all of Joaquín Turina's guitar compositions.
The capricho is slow without quite conveying the sense of mystery of the best performances, but the rest are quite convincing.

Palmun kitaran sointiväri on romanttinen
” Osmo Palmu on sommitellut tarkasti levynsä kappaleiden paikat ja kokonaiskeston. Noin 50 minuutin mittainen levy on muodoltaan kuin konsertti. […] Kuuntelukokemus on nautinnollinen, soitto miellyttävän luistavaa ja hiottua. […] Espanjalaisesta musiikista koostuvan levyn yleisilme on hienostunut ja sisäänpäinkääntynyt. […] Levyn paras ”tarina” on Francisco Tárregan Capricho árabe , jonka maukkaista soinneista ja rehevästä melodiasta Palmu ottaa…

Espanjalaisen kitaran runoutta
”Espanjalaisen kitaramusiikin kolmelle vuosisadalle keskittyvä ohjelma soi Osmo Palmun taitavissa sormissa tunnelmallisesti. […]

[…] Vuosien mittaan olen lukemattomissa arvioissa ylistänyt suomalaisten kitaristien taitotasoa.

”I hadn’t come across the name of the Guitarist Osmo Palmu before but he is plainly yet another of the top-rate guitarists that Finland seems to be producing these days. Technically, his playing is nimble and clean; more importantly, he is musically alert, and plainly has something to say about music he is performing – I’d not heard Falla’s Tombeau de Debussy capture the spirit of Debussy quite so clearly.”

”Moreover, the selections on this disc are well chosen and beautifully programmed. Palmu holds your attention from start to finish, which is certainly not easy in a completely solo guitar recital. […] Palmu’s flawless technique allows him to play the most difficult passages with ease, and his innate sense of drama and of the work’s structure allows him to present all of these works in their best light. […] I am also fascinated and enchanted by Palmu’s performances of the very early fantasies…
