About this release

The release of the album "Polska Pandolfi" by baroque violinist Kreeta-Maria Kentala and harpsichordist Tea Polso combines, according to the musicians playing on the album, "virtuosic and eccentric Pandolfi Meall's early baroque music with almost equally sharp South Pohlian polskis, and the musical hooks of both are guaranteed to get the blood flowing and the pace fluttering." Kreeta-Maria Kentala, a three-time Emma awardee, has studied violin at the Sibelius Academy, Edsberg Music School in Stockholm, and baroque violin at the HKU University of the Arts in Hilversum, the Netherlands. He performs as a soloist, concertmaster and leader of various orchestras, as well as in solo and chamber music projects. Kentala has received Yleisradio's Record of the Year recognition and the Janne award for sound and video recording producers. He likes to perform repertoire by unknown composers and rarely heard compositions, and mixes different genres in an interesting way. All this can also be heard on the new album. Tea Polso has a master's degree in music from the Sibelius Academy, specializing in early music and church music. He has worked both as a church and concert musician. Polso currently works as a harpsichordist and organist in several bands. He is also the director of Seinäjoki's Old Music event. Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli (1624–1687) was an Italian composer and violinist, not much is known about his life. He worked as a court musician in the court of Archduke Ferdinand Karl in Tyrol and after the duke's death he moved to Messina in Sicily. Two collections of his compositions were published in Tyrol and one in Sicily. It has even been argued that Pandolfi's collections made him the founder and godfather of the Austro-German violin school. Kreeta-Maria Kentala and Tea Polso both live in Ostrobothnia and are enthusiastic supporters of Northern Finland's music scene. On their new album, they decided to combine Pandolfi's sonatas with Ostrobothnian polska music, which goes back to the same times as Pandolfi lived. The era of Polska in Ostrobothnia continued until the end of the 19th century, even the beginning of the 20th century - longer than anywhere else in Finland. According to Kentala and Polso, the common features of Pandolfi's music and the Polish people of Ostrobothnia are modality, especially the Doric tone, similar dance rhythms and folk-like melodic passages and chords.

Reviews

  • The contrasts found in polska tunes reflect the structures of Pandolfi’s sonatas quite wonderfully. The transitions between the two genres are bold and invigorating.

  • According to the musicians playing on the album, the release combines “early Baroque music of Pandolfi Mealli with virtuoso and peculiarly sharp twists to South Ostrobothnian polskas that are almost as intricate and the musical hooks of both are guaranteed to get the blood circulating and your feet tapping the beat.” Kreeta-Maria Kentala (baroque violin), Tea Polso (harpsichord).

  • Polskan ja varhaisbarokin onnellinen kohtaaminen

Barokkiviulisti Kreeta-Maria Kentala on aiemminkin yhdistellyt kaustislaisia pelimannijuuriaan vanhaan taidemusiikkiin, mutta yhdessä cembalisti Tea Polson tehty levyuutus ”PolskaPandolfi” hykerryttää luontevuudellaan. Eteläpohjalaisten kansanmusiikkipolskien ja Giovanni Antonio Pandolfin varhaisbarokkisonaattien välille rakentuu vankka silta, jonka huimaavista korkeuksista ainakin itse näin kaksi eri genreä uudella tavalla.
