About this release

"It seems that Finland has an endless supply of young virtuoso pianists, and we can thank Alba for bringing them to light. ...now here is Risto-Matti Marin, seemingly possessed of the same credentials: musicality; a big technique; an ability to project big confident piano sound. ... An interestingly varied program well played, then, with two worthwhile pieces you won't possibly have heard before. Marin has the benefit of big very present piano sound with an appealing touch of resonance thanks to the venue, Helsinki's Johannes Church."

Reviews

  • Risto-Matti Marin is a gifted pianist, imaginative, musical, with excellent technique, great reserves of energy, and an intuitive grasp of music from any era. He’s as convincing in Bach as in Miettinen or Britten, never mannered or artificial. His four CDs offer a wide range of repertoire, all beautifully performed. His special interest in transcription has led him to such forgotten scores as the Liszt/Stradal symphonic poems, of which my favorite is Les Préludes, but there are numerous other…

  • The 35 year-old Finnish pianist Risto-Matti Marin is a brilliant musician with a strong personality and technical skills of an uncommonly high order. His exploration of unusual repertoire and distinctive ideas about programming make these discs a true tour de force. Marin’s doctoral work at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy involves transcriptions and it’s the two all-transcription discs that make the strongest impression. This is not to say that Piano Tales, which contains mostly non-transcribed,…
