Mari Mäntylä is one of the leading guitar artists in Finland. Her main instrument is the decacorde, which is a 10-string classical guitar. Mäntylä has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in various parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia, collaborating with many Finnish and international composers.
Mäntylä's third solo album, Passing Shadows, is the culmination of many years of work. The project began in the spring of the 2020 pandemic. She has sought, more than before, to explore the sonic possibilities of her instrument, different types of touch, and colors. Most of the pieces on the album are new works for the decacorde. In addition, Mäntylä has adapted three guitar pieces for the decacorde: Prelude for guitar by Tõnu Kõrvits, Evocatio by René Eespere and the three-part composition Passing Shadows by Charlotte Bray.
The excellent Canadian Guitar Quartet’s latest offering showcases both their impeccable ensemble playing and typically adventurous programming.
