Tampere powerhouse
The wonderful new album contains the world premieres of the works of three composers from Tampere, Jouni Kaipainen, Paavo Korpijaako and Usko Meriläinen. Tampere Philharmonic piloted by Hannu Linnu is responsible for fine interpretations.
Jouni Kaipainen (b. 1956) composed the supple first version of Keaton (The Ghost of Buster) in 2008 in memory of his friend, actor Markku "Peltsi" Peltola, the supporting force of the lively cultural house Telaka. In 2000, Kaipainen visited the Finnish-Beninese cultural house Villa Karo in Benin, West Africa. A huge, positive culture shock took shape in 2009 in a song called Aubade beninoise, or "Benin's morning song", but it is also included as such in the second half of the flexible Keaton.
Paavo Korpijaako's (b. 1977) Amuse-bouche is a large-orchestral work commissioned by the Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2008. The name is a French kitchen term and means an extra delicious little morsel that the chef uses to get the water on his customer's tongue before the actual meal begins. Jouni Kaipainen characterizes the work in his essay: "rather a variegated, nutritious table setting than a small appetizer".
Usko Meriläinen's (1930-2004) Timeline was created for the opening of Tampere Hall in 1989. The piece is dedicated to the Tampere City Orchestra and is spiritually connected to the space work Sininen suora by the composer's artist friend Kimmo Kaivanno in the lobby of Tampere Hall.
Don’t expect comic “circus” music; this work is impressionistic, dark and moody, often sparsely orchestrated, with fascinating sound combinations.

The performances by the Tampere Philharmonic under the baton of Hannu Lintu are very fine.

The orchestra sounds too far back, and this robs it of some of its power.
