About this release

Music From 17th Century Nun Convents Earthly Angels In 17th century Italy it was quite common for girls to go to a convent. It was often too expensive to get married, so families decided to send their girls to a monastery. For example, in Milan, about half of the girls from aristocratic families lived in convents in the middle of the 17th century. Thus, this was a common way of life, and the Monasteries often focused on a special field, e.g. to music. Among others, Isabella Leonarda, Maria Xaveria Perucona, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani and Rosa Giacinta Badalla were nuns who played music at the time. They were written about and their music was heard at paid concerts.
