Finnish choral history - the unheard of Kuula
Chorus Cathedralis Aboensis' new album Legends 2 contains eight choral works by Toivo Kuula (1883-1918), of which Meren virsi op. 11/2 (arrangement by Levi Madetoja), Juhlamarsi op. 5 , Party Cantata and March of the Nuijamiestes op. 28/4a will be heard as world premiere recordings. In addition, Keinuta kuikua Op. is sung in a Capella versions on the album. 11/6 , Funeral song Op. 11/5 , Tuutulauluu "Tuuti lasta Tuonelahan" Op. 11/4 and Sävel Op. 29b/1.
Two versions of the celebratory march have been recorded for this new recording, one of which features the Kaartin Brass Band conducted by Raine Ampuja alongside CCA, and the other performed by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Petri Sakar. In addition to CCA, the beautiful Juhlakantaat also features baritone Esa Ruuttunen, organist Markku Hietaharju and piano player Pasi Helin.
In the album booklet, the chairman of the Kuula club, Tero Tommila, expertly sheds light on the interesting history of the creation stages of the works.

Reviews

Several are cantatas, and almost all of the music is subdued, almost reverential.

If you’d care to head north the Sibelius choral anthology also reviewed in these pages is more impressive in every respect.
