Janne Mertanen: Joonas Kokkonen's piano works as a world premiere recording
Joonas Kokkonen's (1921-1996) compositional art began by jotting down improvisations from his school days.
Some of the works on this album represent a time when Kokkonen had not yet had his first piano lesson. He only got his first in the fall of 1940 at the Sibelius Academy as a student of Ilmari Hannikainen.

Alba introduce us to the piano music of two Finnish composers
born within nine years of each other.
Kokkonen's solo piano music has not had much prominence. This
collection traces its development in reverse chronology. We start
with the very imaginative and transparently dreamy, leaf-swirling
and driftingly dissonant Bagatelles . This contrasts with
the little Religioso .
