About this release

Founded in 2011, KAAÅS is a piano trio of three talented musicians. Violinist Annemarie Åström is familiar with Nordic violin music, she works actively as an organizer of events and is e.g. Artistic director of the Wegelius Kamarijouset orchestra. Cellist Ulla Lampela is a member of the Central Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra and has produced hospital concerts around Helsinki, e.g. for eating disorders, psychiatric wards and nursing homes. Pianist Tiina Karakorpi has achieved numerous competition successes and performed on major concert stages in Europe. She works actively as an advocate for equality in the music scene and has performed and recorded works composed by women who were blacked out and provided sheet music for them.
The activities of the KAAÅS trio reflect the interests of its members, and together the trio has been able to plan their activities without prejudice. They are e.g. made the first recording of Helvi Leiviskä's piano trio, commissioned a piano trio from Matthew Whitall and studied improvisation with Matthew Barley. The idea of a complete recording of Harri Wessman's piano chamber music has been in the plans of the KAAÅS trio since the band was founded.
The name of the trio is derived from the surnames of its members and describes their life situations in the year they were founded. All of them had small children at home and it was important for the trio to realize the chaotic nature of life together.

Wessmanin naivistiset kamarimusiikkivärit
Vuonna 1949 syntyneen Harri Wessmanin pedagogista musiikkia esitetään paljon, mutta muuten hän on säveltäjänä jäänyt osin ulkopuoliseksi. Syynä voi olla, että jo 70-luvulla Wessman julisti pitävänsä esillä ”musiikin tunnepuolta”. KAAÅS-jousitrion uusi levy Wessmanin pianokamarimusiikista kuitenkin paljastaa, että Wessmanin värikäs, ”uuspateettinen” sävelkieli on kestänyt hyvin aikaa.
Levyn pianokvartetto ja kolme pianotrioa ulottuvat 80-luvulta…
