Landscapes of the mind on the piano
The new Intimate Landscapes for Piano recording contains eight piano pieces by our national composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) interpreted by Tuija Hakkila. The album features: Five Characteristic Impressions op. 103 (1923-1924), Cinq morceaux pour piano (Flower Series) op. 85 (1916-1917), Five Romantic Compositions (Five romantic compositions) op. 101 (1923-1924), Der Sturm (The Storm) op. 109 (1925-1927), Cinq morceaux pour piano (Wood Series) op. 75 (1914), Fünf Skizzen (Five sketches) op. 114 (1929), Zwei Rondinos (Two Rondinos) op. 68 (1912) and To My Beloved Aino JS 161 (1931).
Sibelius composed a large piano production, which includes over a hundred opus-numbered and dozens of unnumbered works, in addition he made numerous piano arrangements of his own orchestral productions. Sibelius continued to create piano music until the very end of his active compositional period. The last piano opus, Fünf Skizzen op. 114, completed in 1929 - three years after the last large-scale orchestral work, Tapiola (op. 112, 1926). Sibelius's latest piano composition is a piano duet for Rakkaalle Aino (JS 161), which he composed as a 60th birthday present for his wife in August 1931. On this record, Hakkila duets the piece in question with Heini Kärkkäinen.
A comprehensive introduction to the album has been prepared by Sibelius researcher Anna Pulkkis, one of the key editors of the composer's critical edition. The cover of the album features a picture taken by Taneli Eskola of the view from Ainola's window.
Tuija Hakkila's interest covers numerous different styles of music, and her repertoire extends from baroque to the very latest music. In addition to the classical piano repertoire, Hakkila has gained a special reputation as a master of the fortepiano. Heini Kärkkäinen is a versatile pianist, a favorite guest soloist of orchestras and a respected chamber musician who has also premiered new music without prejudice.

”Tuija Hakkila soittaa hienon valikoiman myöhäistä Sibeliusta, jossa painottuvat luontokuvat ja intiimit tuokiot … Viisi karakteristista impressiota op. 103 ja Viisi romanttista kappaletta op. 101 tulevat Hakkilan harkitusti ja hellästi soittamina Debussyn preludien tuntumaan. Kaunis ote saa esiin ”Kukka”- ja ”Puu”-sarjojen viehkot sävyt. Viisi luonnosta op. 114 on helppo havaita Sibeliuksen miniatyyrituotannon huipuksi.
Hakkila on koostanut Myrsky-musiikista viisiosaisen sarjan sovittamalla…

”Sibeliuksen pianotuotantoa on syytetty milloin kaupalliseksi milloin epäpianistiseksi. Syytösten kumoamiseen on aina riittänyt hyvän pianistin hyvä levytys. Tuija Hakkila soittaa itsensä siihen joukkoon… Omaleimaisuutta levylle antavat Hakkilan luontevat sovitukset niistä Myrskyn osista, joita Sibelius ei muokannut pianolle. … Levykokonaisuuden viimeistelee Anna Pulkkisin suorapuheinen esittelyteksti, joka asettaa Sibeliuksen pianokappalepuuhat oikeaan kontekstiin.”

”Tuija Hakkila is alive to the emotional ambiguities of this music and delivers performances that offer both virtuosity and sensitivity.”

”This is one of the more exciting releases I have come upon recently. It is a treasure trove of (mostly) mature works by an underappreciated master, played with all the style and grace they deserve. […] This is soulful, beautiful music that more people need to hear. Tuija Hakkila plays marvelously; her sound is bold, deep, and gilded by an exquisite sense of timing and phrasing. Her technique is strong, too, and she forcefully controls all of the challenging passagework-arpeggios and runs-that…
