About this release

Antonio Soler (1729-1783)
Harpsichord sonatas
Anna-Maaria Oramo, harpsichord
The harpsichord sonatas of the monk mystic of El Escorial
Anna-Maaria Oramo's new recording contains a collection of 12 pieces from Antonio Soler's wide and colorful range of keyboard sonatas. Oramo describes the program he chose for the disc:
"The program is a kind of curve of timbres and keys, which starts with a cheerful C major sonata and ends with a melancholy A minor sonata. Of course, I can only say as an outsider, a performer who grew up in Finnish culture, that the Spanish atmosphere is present in a special way in Soler's music. Strong contrasts, ornamentation and the occasional guitar-imitating texture remind me of flamenco. The great things in Soler's life guidelines, devout monkishness and passionate musicianship, give his music a personal look. [...] Soler's amazing range of expressiveness opens up in small details and outside of broad stylistics. The variation of tones, personal decoration and wild virtuosity take the player and the listener into the world of the most diverse emotional states."

Reviews

  • I enjoyed Oramo’s playing in fast and slow sonatas alike.

  • The disc ends with another quietly forward-moving piece of a more contrapuntal character, with a relatively important role for the left hand, again superbly played by Anna-Maaria Oramo.

  • After the exciting (and many) harpsichord sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, those of Antonio Soler provide a similar and wonderful descended style but also begin to be more into early Classicism, and it is thought many were designed not for the harpsichord but the fortepiano.

  • Kotomaan cembalistien kärkikaartiin kuuluva Anna-Maaria Oramo on saattanut levylle aimo annoksen Antonio Solerin sonaatteja. […] Solerin sointivärileikkeihin Oramo…
