About this release

"When Sakari Oramo and the Central Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra join forces and have invited Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach to the parties, something is created that even a journalist who has been reviewing records for 35 years is in awe of. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach reached for a new expressive style, which was called the gallant style. That new way of composing already foreshadowed Viennese classicism, its sweetness and lightness, also full of bold dissonances Sparkling rhythms. Sakari Oramo's refined, aristocratic Europeanness is combined with the Keski-Pohja Chamber Orchestra's strong spirit of playing and relaxed musicianship, resulting in a whole that is full of playing joy, quick reaction and tense phrasing."

Reviews

  • From top to bottom the sound is excellent, with refined smoothness from the upper strings which can dig deep when required, right down to satisfyingly toothsome resonance from the basses.

  • Delightful to listen to, and the Ostrobothian orchestra, playing on period instruments, makes a strong case for them.

  • This one, in radiant SACD sound (the first so offered), immediately jumps to the top of the list, noted conductor Sakari Oramo proving himself a first-rate Bachian, while the energetic and alert playing of the Ostrobothian Chamber Orchestra is as much as anyone could ask for. © 2015

  • The virtue of this disc lies in the skilled musicians of the OCO, who probably would have given Oramo a lot more if only he had asked.

  • As recorded in what seems to be an acoustically excellent hall in the coastal town of Kokkola (about three-quarters of the distance to the north end of the Gulf of Bothnia), the splendid sonic properties of this SACD present the music and the playing of it in the best possible framework.

  • It can sometimes take a Finnish musician to hear afresh, and to bring new insight into German repertoire. The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and Sakari Oramo have renewed the sheer surprise factor in these wonderful little 18th-century symphonies, unleashing the ‘bold and imaginative’ character which struck their early listeners so forcibly. © 2016

Sakari Oramon…
