Great, great Chopin
The Grand Chopin new disc features Frédéric Chopin's four works for piano and orchestra with exquisite interpretations by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra led by Chopin virtuoso Janne Mertanen and Jani Telaranna:
Krakowiak - Grand rondeau de concert Op. 14
Andante spianato & Grande polonaise brillante Op. 22
Grande fantaisie sur des airs Polish Op. 13
Variations sur La ci darem la mano de Don Giovanni de Mozart Op. 2
The songs heard on the album were breakthrough works for Chopin and an entrance ticket to the big world to conquer the public. With this album, Mertanen will have recorded all of the composer's works for orchestra and piano for Alba (the concertos are played on the album ABCD 247).

Excellent work from the Turku Philharmonic under Jani Telaranta as well, and Alba’s sound presents a very natural perspective yet manages to capture all the coloristic orchestral touches that Chopin is not often given enough credit for.

As a result, Mertanen sounds like he’s tinkling away, weakly playing along with the orchestra rather than dominating it as soloist.

Listening to the very opening of the piece proves a most instructive exercise, for whereas both Biret and Mertanen convey a sense of inventive spontaneity as they spin magical webs of dreamy musical poetry, Weiss is rather more prosaic.

”[…] kokonaisuus vahvistaa Mertasen asemaa kansainvälisen tason Chopin-spesialistina.

Janne Mertanen on armoitettu Chopin-soittaja. […] piano-orkesteri-teokset säkenöivät vastustamattomasti. La ci darem la mano -muunnelmat, Krakowiak , Fantasia puolalaisista kansanlauluista ja Andante spianato & Grande polonaise haaveksivat tuoreesti, tuhlailevat kimmeltäviä ornamentteja ja intoutuvat tanssin pyörteeseen.
Kuiskaavasta runollisuudestaan tunnettu Mertanen on vahvistanut soittonsa bravuuria, johon Jani Telarannan johtama Turun filharmoninen orkesteri vastaa jäntevästi.
