"Portraits 2" - more gamer spirit
Central Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra's new album Fiddler's Spring is a follow-up to the highly popular Portraits album (Alba ABCD 205).
The album features art compositions by seven different composers flavored with the distinctive features of folk music:
-Gustav Holst: St Paul's Suite Op. 29 Well 2 (1913), which also includes well-known English folk tunes
-Einojuhani Rautavaara graduated in 1952 Pelimannit Op. 1, which found a boost in both the oldest documentary of Finnish folk music and modern harmony
- Lars-Erik Larsson's Folkvisenatt, characterized as neo-romantic, was completed in 1941 as part of the Det svenska landet series (Sweden) op. 27
-Ture Rangström's three-part Spelmansvår (1943), Pelimann's spring, was originally composed for piano and is one of his last compositions and probably nostalgic for that reason
-Pehr Henrik Nordgren: Pictures of the rural past Op. 139 (2006) is one of the composer's last works, and in it he returns to folk music, which he was already involved in in the 1960s
-Leo Weiner: Divertimento No. 1, Op. 20 (1923) is a series of arrangements for string orchestra of Hungarian folk tunes
-Estonian Rudolf Tobias's Nachtstück/Ööpala (1902/1939) is the atmospheric slow part of his second string quartet and has been arranged for string orchestra by Tobias' compatriot Eduard Tubin
As a brilliant interpreter of the works, the Central Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra, who is deeply familiar with the theme, under the direction of Juha Kankaa.

Reviews

  • Hauntingly evocative, with wonderful new textures and harmonic sequences, this clearly touches the Ostrobothnian player’s hearts.

  • Fiddler’s Spring

is an absolutely delightful collection of chamber music, with a theme of music derived from folk melodies. All the works contained here are from the early to late 20th century, with a variety of composers such as Gustav Holst, Rautavaara, Larsson, Rangström, Norgen, Weiner and Tobias.

Of all the works performed, the most familiar is the Holst

    St. Paul’s Suite.

It is a rousing and precise performance, with the strings getting a boost from the excellent SACD 5.1…

  • Finally, Nordgren’s Juvia maaseudun menniesyydestä (Pictures of Rural Past) is subtitled, “Adaptations of Finnish folk tunes for strings and harp.” Aside from reproducing the tunes monodically with good results, he frequently utilizes harmonic underpinnings that really do sound sentimentally evocative.

  • Sointia, jota tekee mieli koskettaa

”Maineikas kamariorkesteri toimii akseleilla Kokkola-Wien-Tokio, ja kansanmusiikkivaikutteisia teoksia on löytynyt aitoista ja vajoista eri puolilta Eurooppaa. Valikoima on mainio. […] Keski-Pohjanmaan kamariorkesterin sointi on niin kolmiulotteista, että sitä alkaa tehdä mieli kosketella. Ilmaisukirjo on huikea – erityisesti Nordgrenin Maaseutu-sarjassa.”

  • ”Kansanmusiikkivaikutteiset teokset, yhtaikaa riemastuttavan suorat ja korkeataiteelliset esitykset sekä huikea monikanavaäänitys tekevät levystä vastustamattoman pakkauksen.”

  • ”They have made over fifty records together: a glance at the Alba catalogue reveals some of them. I had never heard of the group before; their playing, on this evidence of this disc, is of the very highest quality. […]This is a profound and moving work, fabulously played here. The recording is outstanding rich and realistic”
