Under the spell of dances
The new release Dancing Mozart features interpretations of the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by the Keskipohjanmaa Chamber Orchestra. Mozart was known as an enthusiastic dancer in his time, and his more "dancey" works have now been recorded on the disc. When Mozart was appointed to the post of "imperial and royal chamber musician" in 1787, he hoped that the title would have brought him serious composition tasks in the future. On the contrary, the Vienna Court ordered dances from him in bulk, which the court orchestra performed during the carnival in the famous Redouten halls. The CD of Mozart's dances includes Five Counterdances KV 609 and Six German Dances KV 571, as well as the Marches in D major KV 445 (320c) and KV 335 (320a), the personal Symphony in G major KV 129, the Divertimento in F major KV 138 (125c), where Latin dexterity combines with the gentleness of the classical style, learned contrapuntal to the lightness of the comic opera, Serenata notturna KV 239, where Mozart experimented with a special playing, and the emotional Adagio in E major for violin and orchestra KV 261.
The Central Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra's Mozart interpretations have been recognized around the world. The concerts dedicated to Mozart's music, which KPKO has organized since 1990, have been public successes.

Reviews

  • This album only goes to show that SACD means nothing when the engineering is so close that it cries out for air and resonance. The sound is so frontal that this chamber orchestra of 13 strings and seven other players (judging from the album photo), using modern instruments, sounds naked, small, unenhanced—well, just plain ugly—which is a shame because they’re extremely competent musicians.

The other problem is that Kangas, who founded the ensemble in 1972, maintains a bright pace but is low…

  • ”Juha Kankaan johtaman Keski-Pohjanmaan Kamariorkesterin uusin levy ponkaisee korkeimmalle mahdollisille kansainväliselle tasolle.

  • Rondon Kuukauden levy (11/2010)

    Suomen parasta Mozartia

”Levyn otsikossa luvataan tanssillista Mozartia, eikä ostaja pety.
