Reviews

  • Segerstam’s music is indeed dense and modern, but it is not cold; on the contrary, there always seems to be an undercurrent of tension, and occasionally menace, in every bar he writes.

  • Surely one would not acquire this disk for the Brahms symphony; there are countless others that are superior; likewise I cannot imagine anyone wanting to hear Segerstam’s rather boring symphony.

  • Sorry to have a downer on this but it’s ultimately non-competitive, though I’d always be happy to visit another of Segerstam’s own symphonies, preferably a group of them with a disc to themselves.

  • All in all, this is a refreshing disc, although I am a tad bit disappointed that I did not experience the groundbreaking eccentricity that was looming in expectation.

  • Segerstam oddly manages to be both colorful and staid as he draws generally alert playing from his orchestra.

  • You hear the cat, meowing and hissing; the concertmaster has an important rôle to play in this piece.

  • This is a golden-sounding, horn-rich Brahms Second, magnificently beautiful from moment to moment.

  • Segerstam dedicated this symphony to Nisonen, who leads her section in the Turku Philharmonic, and she makes the most of her opportunity by playing her solos with authority and excellent tone.

  • ”Turun filharmonisen orkesterin toinen jullkaisu kaikkiaan neljän levyn sarjasta Brahmsia ja Segerstamia julkaistiin huhtikuun alussa. Sarjan toisella levyllä kuullaan toisen sinfonian lisäksi Segerstamin sinfonioita. ”
