About this release

Award-winning harpist and composer Laura Hynninen takes the expressive range of her instrument to a new level. In her hands, the beautiful harp reveals menacing, primal, and fierce dimensions; electronics and Hynninen’s own voice also form part of this surprising soundscape.

The themes of the works draw from nature and from emotions that can only be expressed through music. Virtuosity in classical performance, bold and imaginative vocal work, and a distinctive musical language combine on the album to create a unique whole.

Reviews

  • Laura Hynninen is a musician who defies musical boundaries. There is no trace of gratuitous effects; instead, the sounds, colors and harp timbres form a rich, layered landscape where the various fragments complement one another. On Botaurus Stellaris, Hynninen experiments with harp tones and other sounds, layering them and improvising over the top. In doing so, she creates a unique acoustic world that takes the listener on a journey where the secrets of nature, ancient myths and the transience of life prove to be inextricably linked.
