ADAGIO
Mikkeli City Orchestra
Conductor José Serebrier
On the new Adagio album by the world-famous star conductor José Serebrier and the Mikkeli City Orchestra, the pieces composed and arranged for the string orchestra play with passionate emotion. The news includes e.g. the world premiere of a work that Serebrier composed for an a cappella choir at the age of 15, but later orchestrated for a string ensemble. The original version is called Vocalise, but Serebrier named the new version Adagio to avoid confusion. In addition, the world premiere of the works of three American composers will be heard: Cristina Spinei Synched (2010), Elliott Carter Elegy for String Orchestra (1942) and Marc Satterwhite Ossuary Cross (2011).

Reviews

  • It’s just not a satisfying program.

  • Marc Satterwhite’s Ossuary Cross incorporates too many newer-music clichés to leave a distinctive impression; all those insistent repeating chordal punctuations and non-standard string sounds.
