About this release
The internationally awarded chamber choir Key Ensemble releases the Aapine record Key Ensemble, known as a diligent recording artist and perhaps the most interesting chamber choir of the moment, will release the Turku arts night on August 17.
already his sixth album.
The new album contains the work Aapine composed by conductor-professor Atso Almila, which is based on the texts of Heli Laaksonen's book of poems Aapine, published in 2013.
The alphabet poems written by Laaksonen in the southwestern Finnish dialect have been transformed by Almila into fun and open-minded a cappella songs, which are presented on the disc one letter at a time from A to Ö.
In addition to Key Ensemble, the Tapiola choir from Espoo sings on the album, which has performed Aapist together with Key Ensemble, e.g.
At the Kultaranta park concert at the Naantali Music Festival in the summer of 2016.
The Aapine album was recorded in the Riihimäki Garrison Church on January 14-15, 2017 and is produced by the Turku-based record company Alba.
"The poet Heli Laaksonen Aapine appeared a few years ago as a beginner's guide to the Southwestern Finnish mental landscape and language.
Choir leader Teemu Honkanen, who with his Key Ensemble choir is always inclined to cherish local culture, also got excited about Aapis.
Atso Almila was found to be the composer of Aapinen, and the result has now ended up on a surprisingly fresh album.
Aapine is hilarious, sensitive, touching and ready to laugh at himself.
According to my own experience, this is atypical for a representative of southwestern dialects, but a great advantage for a book of poems and a subject for composition.
Atso Almila's composition Aapine is a perfect fit - she knows how to use stylistic borrowings and create characters clearly, precisely and with good craftsmanship, and doesn't try to mess up the text with music, which is fine as it is.
Almila often doubles the melody in an octave or uses other tricks that help the words stand out.
The real insight in the composition is the use of a youth choir along with a chamber choir, which adds sincerity and brightness to the whole.
The full-bodied Key Ensemble and the light-toned Tapiola choir weave various combinations throughout the album, but everything works amazingly naturally both at the level of timbre, intonation and articulation." "The album based on the texts of Heli Laaksonen's book Aapine, published in 2013, is quite a funny case.
The unaccompanied performances of the Key Ensemble and the Tapiola Choir delight with the humorous insights of the alphabet poems written in the dialect of Southwestern Finland, which were built on appealing catchy surfaces.
Skillfully arranged for two vocal groups, the release speaks of the harmony of voices and even a roar in some places." **** Pohjalainen/Juha Seitz 4/9/2017 Almila: Aapine.

★★★★ Yes, Aapine by Heli Laaksonen [https://www.hs.fi/haku/?query=heli+laaksonen] composed by Atso Almilan [https://www.hs.fi/haku/?query=atso+almilan] puts you in a good mood!
Professor of conducting, opera composer Almila aka Azo [https://www.hs.fi/haku/?query=azo], who has dabbled in many musical genres, was just the right person to pick up the ABC book written in the southwestern dialect.
The short-syllable, choppy dialect gives delicious opportunities for rhyme-like hokems and svengs embellished with claps.
Depending on the situation, you can decide which parts are given to be sung by the children's, youth or chamber choir.
The joyous feeling of being together is conveyed by the performance of the Key Ensemble and the Tapiola choir led by Teemu Honkanen [https://www.hs.fi/haku/?query=teemu+honkanen].
There are excellent soloists among them, who also have a genuine dialect tone.
The "Sankartenorissimo" taps his chest with rattan: "PEE.
First come pee, CEE, and then come cee, then REE." The broad bass seems to be singing in the dialect cultivated by Laaksonen as his mother tongue: "It's fair game, don't say no right now." And the soprano: "That's what you say, eno." In the letter A, the children's choir picks up speed and drifts into a mess with permission.
The letter "I" oozes screeching fan screams.
Joy is accompanied by sadness when mom remembers her dead dad.
Almila uses simple methods and stylistic cues in a relaxed and effective way.
There is gospel, lattar, a couple of measures of the wedding march and Jänis sat on the ground.
"Meijä flik putos soffalt" sounds like Rautavaara.
Z gets the boisterous zumba treatment.
The letter Ö moves with a swelling feeling of happiness when the owl is forgiven by its darling: "If you were still my pearly owl, could I be your silly owl?" The choirs are fully involved. The listener does not have to suffer from the beautiful art song.
The cleanliness is commendable and the rhythms are striking, especially when the swing gear falls on.
Key Ensemble's basement bass rumbles really deep.
You can usually find out from the dialect text, but inevitably something always remains unclear.
To that extent, the record would need Laaksonen's book alongside it.
You could package them together.
